Merry Happy Christmas. Almost.
LET'S DO A BOOK TAG.
This one, so the internet tells me goes waaaay back to 2014 and was created by Lizzie Loves Books which is a very long time ago but whatevs. I am adopting it. And I'm going to try and fill it with 2019 reads.
Let's go, festive pals.
ON THE FIRST DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: A PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE.
I really really loved My Sister the Serial Killer. Smart and funny and moving and unique. I loved it.
ON THE SECOND DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: TWO TURTLE DOVES.
I think making me choose just one of anything is harsh, if I can just say that first. However, let's chat a little bit about Tiffy and Leon from The Flatshare. They fell in love via post it notes for crying out loud, and whilst I do think Leon was a bit of a dick towards the end, their story was super cute and I was really rooting for them the whole way through.
ON THE THIRD DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: THREE FRENCH HENS.
I read Nora Sakavic's All for the Game series like reading was going out of fashion. Basically this series was full of characters more dark and twisty than Meredith Grey on a bad day and I am here for it.
ON THE FOURTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: FOUR CALLING BIRDS.
I just read the first in Nicci French's Frieda Klein series, Blue Monday and so I'm going to say that; I didn't realise how much I needed a good crime fiction series in my life but wow I did. I can't wait to read the rest of these.
ON THE FIFTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: FIVE GOLDEN RINGS.
Let's just sit for a while and see if I can come up with an answer to this that isn't The Darkling from Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse. No, no I cannot.
ON THE SIXTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: SIX GEESE A LAYING.
I'm torn here between Holly Black - I read The Wicked King and Queen of Nothing this year and the world-building in that series is sublime and Rainbow Rowell for Wayward Son because the world-building in that book is so good that if you try to tell me that's not just what our world is like then I'll fight you.
ON THE SEVENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: SEVEN SWANS A SWIMMING.
Who needs seven swans when all it takes is one good animal sidekick? Who’s your favourite animal sidekick?
I finally read The Book of Dust this year which means I get to cheat a little bit (because he doesn't really feature in this book) and say Pantalaimon from His Dark Materials.
ON THE EIGHTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: EIGHT MAIDS A MILKING.
Milk is so 18th century. Which book or series takes beverages/food to a whole new level?
The Flatshare. This book again, I know, I'm sorry but in my defence,we all need a flatmate that can bake like Tiffy.
ON THE NINTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: NINE LADIES DANCING.
Oh hi there Verity from Code Name Verity. I'm looking at you. Also, might need to go and be a little sad for a while now after remembering that story. Kiss me, Hardy.
Sob.
ON THE TENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: TEN LORDS A LEAPING.
Malcolm from The Book of Dust, I'm looking at you, you wonderful, brave, adorable boy. You did good.
ON THE ELEVENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: ELEVEN PIPES PIPING.
What is your favourite book or bookish thing with musical influence? (It can be about music, reference music a lot etc.)
